08 Likboden | Guidad tur i Gamla byn

The Mortuary Storehouse – In English

When winter held the village in its firmest grip and the ground was frozen, no graves could be dug. Those who died, either in the village or at the works, were therefore laid to rest in the storehouse to await another season.

There they remained in silence while life outside continued. Fires were kept burning in the cottages, work at the works carried on as usual, and the days passed, one by one, through cold and darkness. Those left behind had to carry their grief without the sense of closure that a funeral would otherwise have provided.

Only when spring arrived and the frost released its hold on the earth could the deceased be taken to their final resting place. People would then gather, and the farewell that had been delayed could finally take place. It is a quiet reminder of how closely life was once governed by the forces of nature, when even the final goodbye had to follow the changing seasons.
