Den förödande branden i byn
Det började som en till synes begränsad händelse, på eftermiddagen den15 september 1803. En sotbrand tog fart hos garnmakaren Hasselbergs gård, men en ungdom skyndade till för att hjälpa till att släcka. De trodde att faran var över. Men det de inte kunde se var att gnistor från elden redan hade fått fäste i höet i ladugården intill.
Det som därefter tog vid kom att bli en av de mest förödande bränderna i byns historia. Elden spred sig snabbt och utan nåd. Av byns bebyggelse förtärdes 102 hus, och endast 23 undkom lågorna.
Ett av dem var huset på Hamngatan 15, ett ensamt vittne som än i dag står kvar. Att just detta hus klarade sig upplevdes redan då som ett under, och i dag bär det på minnet av en katastrof som förändrade hela byn.
Kyrkan, klockstapeln och herrgården slukades av elden, innan branden fortsatte vidare mot Bruket i Koppardalen. Förödelsen var total. De boende hoppas på att få hjälp av Grytnäsbönderna men de hade fullt upp att säkra sitt eget från branden, som närmade sig i vindens fart.
Mot allt detta står ett enda ljus i mörkret: endast en människa miste livet, en kvinna som låg och vilade när branden nådde hennes hus. Alla andra överlevde, men till vilket liv? När elden hade lagt sig var både bostäder och arbetsplatser förstörda. För de drabbade följde en tid av osäkerhet, sorg och mödosam återuppbyggnad.
The Devastating Village Fire – In English
It began as a seemingly minor incident on the afternoon of 15 September 1803. A chimney fire broke out at the home of the yarn maker Hasselberg, but a young person quickly came to help extinguish it. They believed the danger had passed. What they could not see was that sparks from the fire had already ignited the hay in the neighbouring barn.
What followed became one of the most devastating fires in the history of the village. The flames spread rapidly and without mercy. Of all the buildings in the village, 102 were consumed by the fire and only 23 escaped the flames.
One of the buildings that survived was the house at Hamngatan 15, a solitary witness that still stands today. Its survival was considered a miracle even then, and today the house preserves the memory of a disaster that transformed the entire village.
The church, the bell tower and the manor house were engulfed by the flames before the fire continued towards the works in Koppardalen. The devastation was complete. The villagers hoped to receive help from the farmers of Grytnäs, but they were fully occupied with protecting their own homes from the fire, which was approaching as swiftly as the wind.
Against all this destruction, there was one glimmer of light: only one person lost her life, a woman who was resting when the fire reached her home. Everyone else survived, but what kind of life awaited them? Once the flames had died down, both homes and workplaces lay in ruins. Those affected faced a long period of uncertainty, grief and arduous reconstruction.
